Resolume 4.2 Released - Smoother and Faster

4.2 improves on the stuff that you use every day. The stuff that allows you to do your amazing shows on screens all across the globe. Because we know this is what matters to you most. A stable, fast and healthy application.

UPDATE: We have now also released maintenance version 4.2.1 which brings a number of bug fixes.

phpBB [video]

New DXV 3 codec
Faster playback, smaller files, better image quality. What more can you ask from a codec?
1_DXV3.jpg
For most content, file size has gone down 25% when using an alpha channel. Increased file size is no longer an excuse to render your footage without alpha. Luma keying is sooooo 2004.

There is now a high quality option in the codec for those cases where your subtle gradients were showing banding. Beware, with great power comes great responsibility: files are twice as big in this high quality mode. So use it where banding is an issue, not as the default render setting.

2 SMPTE Inputs
Because 2 is better than 1.
2_DualSmpte.jpg
Workflow is improved with nice big buttons on the layers & clip panels and you’ll see the timecode on the toolbar so it’s there where you need it.

Smooother playback
This one caused quite a few grey hairs on our balding skulls ;-) It took us very long to find out where exactly things were going wrong, but we finally improved playback smoothness.

To get the best results, render your clips on 30fps (not 25), use the DXV codec, set the playback to timeline (not BPM) and remove audio from your clips.

Respect Bypass on slices with layer input
You can now set a slice to ignore the bypass of a layer. This way you can hide a layer from the composition but still use it in the advanced output.

Comment from Mulky:

Looks promising. Probably shouldn't upgrade the morning of a show though.
Probably.

Comment from Sadler:

Benchmark is better for me with 20+ (once it had settled in) on noisy with GTX970 where before I had 17 all else being the same.

Speaking of Noisy - is that a new effect that's slipped in? I hadn't noticed it before. And Grid?

I guess it's better to have effects slip in than bugs ;) Feature list updated.

Comment from Tecno`:

Hi Joris,

Good stuff with the update. Just a quick questions re smoother playback.

Would you still recommend 30fps files if outputting to a 50hz video mixer or is that specifically for 60hz outputs?

Thanks,

Tim

Comment from Joris:

What matters is your output screen's refresh rate.

If your computer is directly connected to a display running at 50Hz, 25 fps would indeed be best. But if you're connected to a PAL mixer via a dodgy converter running at 60Hz, Resolume's output will be 60Hz, so it's still best to use 30 fps.

Comment from He2neg:

running it since today in some testings, all good and stable so far
the noisy effect ist nice... but the noisy transition is even better i like :P

Or in America

Comment from Joris:

If you're in the States using a PAL mixer with a dodgy converter , I'd say micro stuttering and refresh cycle mismatches are the least of your problems :)

Comment from weezhum:

What is the Is key in the advanced output Output Transformation window under the Slice Name????
Also it seems the jpg bug is fixed!!!

Comment from leolodreamland:

No HAP? This must be April fool, right?

Comment from dirtyjohn_lv:

Touch Designer 077 = no hap support
Touch Designer 088 = supports hap
VDMX 4 = no hap support
VDMX 5 = supports hap (vidox develop both)
Resolume 4 = no hap support
Resolume 5 = not released but will most likely support hap

See a pattern? Most software companies only add new decode engines on major version releases.

Even a huge company like Adobe waits until a major version change to add/drop some codec support. I don't understand what makes this a hard concept. :?

Have you even tried DXV3 against HAP yet?

Certain broadcast video equipment uses a dedicated input for alpha channel. This addition to Advanced Screen Setup allows you send a slice's processed alpha as a separate output. So it's asking you if that slice is a key (alpha channel) or not. Off by default since a lot of people will never need it. Super cool feature if you do.

Thanks so much!! I appreciate it.

Comment from Christoph:

Sounds promising! I didn't really get to testing the new version, but tried installing arena on a macbook and a windows laptop and avenue on another windows machine. On both windows machines i got an error message "17f0: Arena.exe - System Error" "The program can't start because freeglut.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
When clicking "ok" arena is working but i was wondering if someone else got the problem.
greetings,

Comment from Joris:

Yeah, this is the Pixels in Space plugin being a little greedy. It was patched around 16 hours after the initial release. If you downloaded before then, you can just re-download the patched installer and re-install. Then you won't receive this error message anymore.

Comment from bryerkerk:

This update is so awesome! It allows me to focus on content and creativity then worrying about how many clips I can fire! You're awesome Resolume!

Comment from emilesteginga:

I read that you fixed the Mac QuickLook plugin to show DXV thumbnails and previews in Finder. Is this for all OSX? I am now still on Mountain Lion because of this annoying problem.

i remember that one of the resolume guy said that 50/60 fps file is the best for resolume no?

Comment from Joris:

Complete books have been written about refresh rates and fps, and what works best varies per computer, region, signal setup and what you want to achieve.

The rule of thumb is to match your fps to a factor of your refresh rate.

So when refreshing at 60Hz, your content should be at 120/60/30/15 fps. At 50Hz, your content should be 100/50/25 fps. Of course 50/60 fps will be visually smoother than 25/30 fps, because you're displaying the same motion with twice as many frames. But your computer also has to do twice as much work, so it all depends. I wouldn't say one or the other is 'best for Resolume'.
