For me this looks like the clips you try to play are audio only, are you sure the video inside the clips is ready to play and not broken? (Try to play the file in quicktime)

i do this the other way round :
i mapped the bpm Tab on my midi controller, and from time to time i tap the bpm on the right way
Takes the same time then check the blinking light if its correct
and its possible immediately

I dont know exactly what you want to reach but if you didnt saw it so far you may be happy with this option :
Set the Transport of the Clip to BPM and then you´ll see the parameter "beat looper" below the transport.
