yes codecs can really have a huge effect. If you don't compress your material in a good way it will slow down dramatically. the resolume freeframe file should be called resolume.exe ... that's why it doesnn't work right away, just rename it to resolum.exe and you are o.k.

you can download the project here, but we are not supporting this version fully yet because things can still go wrong, we think is pretty stable but work has to be done, but you are free to use it...

you are right about the zoom but ati supports a technique similar to dvd max, it's called the theatre mode and is found in teh overlay tab of your the advanced settings of your videocard. we are currently working on the effects part of resolume, the new version will have more control over the parameters, we are introducing playmodes to parameters...
but just wait, there is a lot of changes coming up, be patient...
