NVidia vs ATI vs max number of displays connect

Post by mrfipe »

Hello All,

I would like to know your experience using Nvidia and ATI cards with large number of displays connected.

I need to setup a machine capable of output 12 screens (1280x800) and a control display (1920x1080)
Fast Intel CPU and about 16~32GB of RAM.
3 SSD in RAID 0
And what about the graphics??

ATI ASUS HD7970-DC2T 3GD5 with 4 Matrox TripleHead2Go DP

or

two GTX780-3GD5 with 3 Matrox TripleHead2Go DP

Best regards
Filipe José Branco

NVIDIA cards seem to perform better over the ATI stuff

more than 8gb of ram is redundant as resolumes a 32 bit app anyways

ultimately for that many displays I'd look at using multiple servers...

Nvidia has better reliability, i've found the AMD ones have much better performance but random shit tends to happen to resolume. Nvidia artificially keeps their OpenGl performance down so to entice people to Quadro's.

The 780 is a big step forward and AMD doesn't have an answer for it yet. I'd say you win on both fronts with that card.

3 SSD"s in RAID0, you will need a suitable RAID card. do not try and do this with shitty software RAID, it will not work. you'll need to spend a mint on the RAID card to, so check into it and budget accordingly.

you Can Only Use 2 Triple head to go's in Windows and only one with a Mac...Also the Triple heads to go's show up as one screen, it takes some time to set up up with slices to get it as three. All I can say is do your research so you don't end up buyin stuff you can't use. For that many outputs at that resolution you need to consider multiple servers...

I have to argue with you deadsound, you can use multiple THTGO with a macintosh. another solution in one THTGO and one Datapath X4.

I have experience with a 780 card in a Mac Pro with 8 outputs (1280x800) + 1 FullHD output for resolume (one THTGO, one X4, and one projector directly)

I would suggest two servers with an Nvidia 780 card, and two X4's (one for each server) what is much expensive than the THTGObut it has 4 outputs and all of them can be 1920x1080. with this you will have the 12+2 outputs and in the future if you buy THTGOyou can have 16 outputs which is nice :)

Hello,

Thank you for the knowledge.
For now I bought a GTX 760 with 4GB RAM. I made some testes and with:
5 outputs at 1024x768 + 1 output full-HD for control + live video input with Blackmagic card > 60fps

when I get more testes I'll post here.
