Playstation 3

Have you SEEN the specs of the ps3 yet?!?!?

It blows everything else out the water in terms of bus speed RAM speed and CPU performance (see below).

What's this got to do with VJing?

Well obviously this is what computers are capable of in the future, imagine what we're in store for. Hardware (in the outboard sense) video mixing will disappear, it's too expensive and always will be for the VJ I reckon and it will be replaces by software running on machines with ridiculous spec like this with cheaper hardware controllers. The future of VJ software, I gather, is all about shader technology (for onboard videcard hardware mixing, yes?) and this kind of machine can do the business. Imagine one laptop controlling multiple hi-res multi-layer outputs with ease.

How far away?

Just food for thought. Any thoughts?

BTW - I'm not talking about vjing with a playstation, but how it has raised the technological bar in a relatively small affordable package.

from BBC...

CPU Cell Processor running at 3.2Ghz with 7 special purpose 3.2Ghz processors, capable of 218 gigaflops of performance

GPU RSX at 550MHz 1.8 teraflop floating point performance

256Mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 GHz

256Mb of GDDR VRAM at 700Mhz

System Floating Point Performance of 2 teraflops.
