anyone using picvideo mjpeg codec?!?!?

Post by globus »

also...anyone using picvideo mjpeg codec?!?!?
what are the recommended parameters to set up?!?!?
especially, what should the "quality" setting in codec options be like???
(it ranges from 0 to 20, while 20 is a default)
it changes size of the files dramatically & im afraid this is the reason why the loops are running lil bit slow/weird on my laptop (p4, 512 ram, ati 32 mb ;(( , 7200 rpm external hdd)
i d really appreciate if anyone could help ,)
thanx a lot

Yes we've used it for the last 3+ years. Its great, lowest CPU usage and builtin deblocking other than its $28 price tag its the ideal mjpeg codec.
When we did some tests in V2 we output the same file with the last 5 settings (15-20) and there was some variance in quility & file size. We ended up using 19 most of the time as HD space isn't really an issue anymore and the quality is at its best. The compression does work expedentially though - the size difference between 16 & 17 is a couple of MB but the between 19 & 20 it was more like 50mb!
While writing this, I ran a clip through virtualdub and these were the results (clip was 640x480 11 seconds) -
15 = 13mb
16 = 15mb
17 = 17mb
18 = 18mb
19 = 23.4mb (which I default would use)
20 = 98mb

Oh and get more RAM asap - this will probably fix your playback issues - XP uses 350mb with nothing running, if you can afford it a 1gb stick to go along side your 512mb and will make everything run nicer.

Is PicVideo better than the Morgan MJPG codec? I have been noticing some performance issues with running 640x480 clips.

Different companies versions of the same codec.
Picvideo runs flawlessly on our pc's, and as a result never tried Morgans codec.

Might I ask at what resolution?

Thanks!
