Speed/Time Switch

Post by Foggy_Lens »

Hi all,

Suggestion for you: I find myself asked most often to match with another element in terms of a time up or time down. So I find myself fiddling with the speed modifier or else using the BPM set to 60 as a reference, but it would be really great to be able to set opacity (and other parameters) to adjust based on a static time amount. Layer Transition has something like this.

I would imagine that by right clicking the "speed" next to the slider it can switch the mode from "speed" to "time", so you can specify an exact amount for completion.

Alternatively, in the info box, it says that 1 is the "normal rate" and 2 is twice as fast. It seems that "normal" is 5 seconds, is there a way of redefining "normal" for each composition?

Thanks!

Could you achieve this with the envelope tool?

To my understanding, envelope alters the curve of how a transition completes. Super useful tool, but what I'm interested in is a quick and precise way of defining time-to-completion of an effect. Envelope provides fine tuning within a given speed.

Again, there's totally a workaround that I know of using BPM set to 60, but I think it would be useful to have a feature that's dedicated for this. There are times when I'm not synced with a lighting console and the lighting designer tells me verbally that her fade is 1.25 seconds and I'd love to be able to just type that in and match without fiddling...

Gotcha, Sorry, I was thinking of something else.
My suggestion would work but it wouldn't be something you can do on the fly, like you are requesting.

What I was talking about was turning on the Envelope tool for the of the clip,
The setting the Opacity to be controlled by the "Clip Position",
Then pausing the clip,
Then scrubbing the playhead of the clip to the point where you want it to start fading out,
Then adding a keyframe or node to the envelope at that point (when paused the node should be in the exact spot of the playhead),
Then turning the first or last node or keyframe down to 0.

This would get you what you were asking for, but again, not an on-the-fly solution.

Not sure if your BPM work around or a Touch Designer OSC patch would be quicker. I would think the BPM would be, as it's once less app to open and to switch back and forth on.
