Welcome to Wire!

We’re so excited to finally introduce you to our new addition to the Resolume family, say hello to Wire!

Wire is a modular node-based patching environment to create effects, mixers and video generators for Arena & Avenue.

phpBB [video]

Why?
Does the world really need another patching environment? Yes, we think it does. There are some truly great patching environments available; Max, Notch, TouchDesigner, vvvv, Vuo, to name just a few. All of these have been around for decades and all have their own purpose, strengths and weaknesses. However none of them tick all our boxes. We want something lightweight, embeddable, cross-platform and most of all, easy to use and learn. That patching environment did not exist yet, and since the days of Quartz Composer we have been frustrated and dreaming about a patching environment that would compliment Arena and Avenue.

Of course Wire can not be compared to patching environments that have been around for decades but it does already prove itself very useful in expanding the capabilities of Arena & Avenue. In fact, you might have already been using Wire effects and generators without even noticing. Remember the Abstract Field source and Acuarela & Tilt Shift effects we added to Arena and Avenue a few versions back? Those are made in Wire! And the best thing is; you can now edit them and make your own variations. Or learn how they were made and create something entirely new.

The Future?
We think we have laid the foundation for a very friendly and capable environment that will only get better over time. We look forward to expanding into new territories in the future like audio playback, synthesis and effects. 3D rendering. More IO protocols. Online content. To name just a few. There is so much fun stuff that can be added to Wire it’s hard to decide what to do first. Help us prioritize what to do next, by telling us what you would like to be added in the future.

Help!
Wire includes a lot of example patches that get you going very quickly. The welcome screen will help you to get started right away. For every node there is a documentation patch that explains exactly what it does. Check out the in-depth support articles that explain the concepts behind Wire. Of course you are free to ask any question on our forum but also join our growing Slack community where you can get very quick feedback via chat. We look forward to you feedback on Wire!

Pricing
Resolume Wire for 1 computer is €399 Euro. Licenses are available in the shop.

Download
A free trial is available now on our downloads page so you can try Wire for as long as you like.

Fix List
Arena & Avenue 7.4.0 of course contain the full Wire integration but also fixes the following bugs and crashes.
- #15260 Presets for Mixers/Blend Modes
- #14859 Support dragging .avc file onto resolume
- #14729 Accept comma as decimal separator
- #15266 Crash on exit with output/preview set to picture in picture, and previewing clip
- #15048 Crash undoing clip paste in another deck
- #14991 Crash trying to drop VST effect onto layer clip thumbnail
- #14906 Crash after disconnecting midi device which popped 'already in use'
- #11625 Crash with waking machine from sleep with DMA on
- #13716 Mapped Layer blend shortcuts change on adding other blend modes
- #14816 SDI and NDI capture textures can flash into eachother
- #14951 /composition/layers/1/clips/*/transport/ position/behaviour/duration/divide no worky
- #14999 Column sometimes doesn't get highlighted on trigger, next column index is wrong
- #15092 Selecting another MIDI shortcut preset stops OSC output
- #15224 Low and Upper case blends names are ordered separately, lower case end up at the end of the list, this can get confusing
- #15231 Loading layout preset can make Shortcuts panel show up
- #15190 Loading a file in full screen Alley, makes the file list show up, you can't hide it

Comment from Babcom:

This is fantastic news! Congrats to this new milestone in AV content creation ✨
Will wire work with the Resolume USB license key? (Yes it does - I have managed to transfer the license now)

Thanks for your hard work!

Comment from stijnfrishert:

Glad you got it working Babcom! Enjoy patching :)

As a friendly reminder (to anyone who reads this), the team's pretty active on our Slack community as well, where you can ask questions and share patches too in the #wire channel.

Comment from Frischvergiftung:

Wow, we are really excitd about this! And judging from the past, this coming from Resolume, this will actually work just fine and reliably! Thank you!

Any plans on adding 3D functionality in there? Loading OBJs, materials, Cameras, Animation, etc?

It's on the roadmap, no ETA that I know of, but yes, eventually. :)

Comment from Zig-Zag:

I've been crying quiet tears for Quartz Composer. Haven't yet tried Wire but sounds like I will be immediately in love as one would expect from a proper rebound relationship. Looks amazing! Thanks Resolume!

Comment from paralion:

So, Wire will be included for free in a regular arena license?

Wire license is a separate purchase, sorry. https://resolume.com/shop/

Comment from vectorfuton:

This has me really excited! And as soon as I climb out of my mountain of debt and can afford to mess with Wire, it's on! The post says free trial? Maybe I missed how long trial lasts? 30 days?

Comment from Zoltán:

Wire licensing is similar to Arena.
Wire runs with watermark until registered, every feature works, except patch compiling.
There is no limit on how long you can use it with watermark.

Comment from VjCtrldChaos:

Nice keen to dig into this and see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Would be super nice down the road to see Touch Engine or Notch block playback support inside Wire, But it looks pretty solid the way it is!

Comment from VjCtrldChaos:

Did I just see a "Don't SHAVE" dialog pop up sneakily instead of "Don't Save" when switching scenes? if so that is brilliant as it didn't pop up again when I tried to recreate it.

Maaaaaybe? ;)

Comment from francoe:

Colin Newman fan here. 8-)

Comment from VjCtrldChaos:

It's pretty intuitive once you figure out what some of the nodes are named (took me a while to find the "Pack" node was required to make vector 3s) but that's probably from me jumping in without reading the manual.
The only quality of life improvement I'd love to see based on my quick noodling around, is when you drag off an input/output to create a new node, that the text search also pops up along with the Node Library dialog. Kinda of like when we currently double click in the node graph.

Had never heard of him, but that's nice! They should do our official theme song ;)
What's more, he's in a band called Githead now and we use git for our source code version control.

Yeah, I guess that comes with learning any new language, we hope the tutorials and in-app documentation provide enough to find most of what you need.

I totally see what you're proposing, I think we've already got an issue in our tracker that describes such a feature. Good to know there's more interest in it. :)

Comment from i.m.klif:

Would it be possible to have few patches open at the same time? Being a MaxMSP user, I find this functionality essential - it allows quick cut and paste from different patches, without doing open and close several times.

No it's not yet possible to have multiple patches open. We'd like to add tabs to the Wire editor in the future.

Comment from hive8:

Would it be possible to add VS code as the default editor for shaders, the current Wire text editor has no view options, on a 4K screen its really small :)

We were just discussing this today as creating a full-blown shader editor is quite a task on itself. Utilising an editor like VS Code will be very useful. A.t.m you can already use the VS Code editor as the Shaders are just files on your disk, Wire monitors changes in the file and pick up changes immediately.
Check the Resources, select your ISF shader and click on the folder icon. It will reveal the ISF shader file on disk. Open en Edit it in VS Code, when you press save the changes will be picked up by Wire.

In the future we want to see if we can make this process more user friendly.

Comment from Arvol:

Yup! I've been using Sublime, and as Edwin said, Wire monitors the files and updates on changes :)

Comment from vt100:

hey - i'm just getting into wire. I looked around on the forum and couldn't find it - but are people sharing patches with each other? Where's that go down?

Comment from stijnfrishert:

A lot of the Wire people are in our Slack community. You can share patches there, but you're also free to do so over here, of course. :)

Comment from batchass:

Thanks for this excellent software!

I hope it will support in the future:
GTLF files exported from Blender
websocket protocol to be able to control the FloatIns from a web page

Comment from oniStudio:

Opening up patch example to learn the specifics of a node is tedious. Is there a manual out documenting all the different nodes like a wiki page?

Comment from tenko_jp:

I think Wire is great.
Currently, I am trying and erroring patches.
When wiring, it's easy to lose track of what I was doing.
I am Japanese.
I want to enter Japanese in UI-> comment.
When I look at the saved .wire file, the Japanese comment remains, but it does not appear on the patch edit screen.
I hope UI-> comments will be multibyte compatible.

I thought the same way.
So I extracted and summarized the comment text of the node patch example.

https://infostyle.jp/wire/unofficial-document.html

I wanted a Japanese version of the document, so the automatic translation version is the default.
However, switching between EN / JP will also switch to the original text.
In addition, you can search by node name.
I hope it helps.

There is no wiki as there are simply too many nodes and changes to keep that up to date.

The Training Video's take you through the most commonly used nodes: https://resolume.com/training/wire

After that there are articles on subjects such as oscillators, shapes, randomness, logic, math etc.. These articles explain the use of nearly all the nodes in those catagories: https://resolume.com/support?wire

let me know if you are missing any subject in general and I'll see what I can do to add it.
