See if you can get the prior release 2.3beta, it's far more stable I find. Some people seem to be using 2.4 with success, I can't seem to keep it open for long without it falling over, I find it unusable too.

I have a 2Ghz solo- 3 layers with effects, 50-60fps, 400x300 scaled to 800x600.
going up to 640x480 is a bit of a leap processing wise, I consider framerate/effects more important than resolution. I think when I was testing 640x480 it would drop down to 15fps and it didn't really like to many ...
