I give my columns (deck-specific) names by simply adding a layer at the top of the stack and naming each empty clip up there, which therefore appears as a title right below the column header. Be sure to make this layer 'ignore column triggers' and maybe even black ...

I wrote a simple Quartz patch that gives you this control not only over stills and sources etc but also on clips, and it doesn't depend on the clip length..

Hmm.. I took a look an its not working as expected in mine either (it was once!)

I've made some edits, and attached again here. Now you need to enter the first and last clip as a text value rather than use the parameter wheel. Should be fine, it's working at my end at least!
