extending cam wire

Post by silva »

Hi all,

how do I extend a signal coming from a video-cam? I can use firewire, but the cam is approx. 25 meters from my PC...?
How do you guys do this?

Thanks
(and sorry for my earlier post in the wrong topic...)

Hi Silva,
we had this same problem a while back and we couldn't find any long firewire cables as well. We used a long s-video cable and uses a capture card to get the signal into the computer. Sometimes the delay when using firewire is bigger then when using an s-video signal.
So the downside is that you need an extra capture card but the ppositive side is that you lose some delay.

Cheers

firewire has a maximum reach of about 25 feet. Any more than that and you will need an amplifier/repeater every 25 feet to keep the signal strong. I too use s-video and capture cards for my cameras. Not only is the distance restriction less, but as edwin said the delay does tend to be less than firewire

Thanks guys,
maybe a stupid question, but what is the capture card you're talking about? Is this like a video-card for use inside the PC, which gives you an S-video input?
Thanks!

that's exactly what it is. They are often marketed as "tv cards" allowing you to watch tv on your computer - or "video capture" cards... there are pci ones (inside computer) and external usb ones. The pci ones generally have less latency than the usb ones though in my experience. They can be found pretty cheap these days... don't need anything really fancy for resolume, it'll work with almost anything
