Why do clips 'freeze' for a second when triggered?

Post by melemel »

I have a new laptop.. Instead of being instant when triggered (which they were on my old laptop), my clips now freeze for half a second before playing. It's bad enough to make it unusable live.

My old laptop did this for a while until I learnt to disable my virus software. But even with no virus software running in the background, it does it. Are there any other things I can check for under Processes in Windows Task Manager?

I'm running windows xp on a HP Compaq 6715b,120gb hard drive with 40gb free, 1gb RAM, 1.9 Ghz AMD Turion 64x2. Its only 2 months old and otherwise runs cleanly. When i first got the machine, i installed resolume first thing and it was working perefctly. It was only after installing other programs that it began to misbehave..

This is driving me nuts - any help much appreciated

Are you using Quicktime files? If so you can try to install quicktime 6 for smooth triggering.

My guess is it has something to do with the codecs installed on your system.

How are your clips encoded, and what codecs are you using to play them back? Try using G-Spot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) to play them back and see what the real decoding path is.

My guesses as to the delays are:

1) Improper AVI splitter - probably the OS AVI Splitter or Haali
2) If using PicVideo MJPEG, make sure advanced deblocking is turned OFF for decoding
3) If using ffdshow, either disable it for MJPEG decoding, or make sure all postprocessing is OFF

Other possible issues:

1) Anti-virus
2) Search indexing software

Try using the Microsoft Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96653.aspx) to see what's going on

Thanks for the replies. No im not using quicktime. All my clips are compressed with Morgan MJPEG and only 320x240 so not a big drain on the juice, and I guess they are played back with the same? I don't know about playback - I'd always assumed it was the same.

I'm not 100% on what an AVI splitter is.. but i know that PicVideo and ffdshow are not installed..

Its not antivirus.. i disabled it, and i dont know what search indexing software is - but ill look into it and see. Thanks for your help

Download and run the G-Spot utility, and use it to play one of your clips.

At the bottom of the window it will say MS A/V, with a button with a 1 in it just below it. Press the button. The window will tell you the decoding chain in use, starting with the splitter, then the codec and the video renderer.

See what is there. It should be AVI Splitter -> Morgan MJPEG -> Video renderer. If that is all in order, something is happening to the clips when being pulled from disk.

The AVI splitter is the part of the decoding chain that takes the data coming in from the disk, splits the audio and video parts, sends the video to the video codec and the audio to the audio codec.

Another thing that might be happening is this: Windows will try to play the clip with the preferred decoding chain - if that fails, it will try other options until it gets something that works. This could account for the delay. But try the G-Spot thing, that will give you useful info.
