we just wanted to share our thoughts about the future development of resolume.

We decided not to put audio playback in version 2.0. Alltough audio playback might at first seem a logical next step, it does not make much sense from an interface design point of view.

Resolume has always been about manipulating video from a graphic point of view. And all the functions and interface are made for this only.

Take for instance the random playback mode. (for those that do not know it: it plays the frames from a videofile in random order creating a very chaotic effect) This makes perfect sense looking at video without audio. Now apply this random playmode to an audiovisual (AV) video ... what will happen to the audio? It will sound all chopped up. Now this might be good for some experimental AV performances but for most AV artists it is not a button you want to exidentally hit in the middle of a show :-)

This is just one example of why adding audio playback to resolume is not a good idea. The interface is just not build for it. We do however very much would like to enter the AV world (because there is room for improvement and differnt approaches) but with a new application build especially for AV performances.

we have already done some testing with AV playback and things are looking good but a lot of work needs to be done and we wil start this new project after the introduction of resolume version 2.0.

Hope you all understand our point of view and we are interested to hear all your opinions about this matter.

hi.
i'm one of that asked about the possibility to play AV files in resolume. i made that request more to stimulate a discussion maybe. also cause from my point of view (vj) i haven't really think how, where, when, using AV file.

as you well explain redirecting the discussion in a more rational point of view (yours point of v.: programmers) that would be difficult to apply starting from the last resolume version. as u say it was built all around playing video only and adding audio would request a completely different architecture.

your answer still let me know that you guys are thinking about resolume at 360°. and that's good.

i think that the future development of resolume should go to a huge (and still friendly and "easy") and plastic-flexible software that allows you to play for istance many different kind of files (from swf to jpg...) and giving filters etc that are not to "strong" or invasive and that do not generate images, so that u have to "put visual contents" inside. the best software in vj field should not be recocgnizable from the video out. so to push users and vj to search for a their own style instead of programmers of software one. but i think resolume already has that approach.

something to work on, if it's up to you (i'm not a programmer), could be the possibility to reach a better resolution and image quality (is it only an hardware problem?).

....

i'm waitin for the nxt version (when the exact release day?).

some more thoughts will come.

this is the right decision, imho. I don't think audio playback will have a real use for the most of the resolume users. Keep the interface simple. Resolume is almost perfect like it is.
One thing maybe would be the opportunity to switch the view of the library to a keyboard layout, so you can use midikeyboards easier. But thats just "nice to have"

Agreed, no audio = no problem
Already 2 years with Resolume: never need to use audio playback.
That why I bought my licence.
Resolume is visual and there is so much possibilities:

Maybe there is still some new option to add:

- multiple desk easy to change: ie. Tab system.
+/- 20 video load on my desk is not enought.

- more channel ... today: 3 is good,
5 is better ...

time to upgrade it to DirectX 9, also is really need.

the thing i'm waiting for is the ability to add a *lot* more videos to a deck. I checked out the resolume demo, and loved it except for that. Once I can add somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-75 videos to a deck, I'll chuck my crap-ass copy of Arkaos out the window, and buy me a Resolume license

nice one guys - good to see the train of thoughts that goes towards developing your (excellent) software.
As someone who works only in the visual realm, the things i find great about Resolume are the simple interface, and the focus on providing an extremely responsive delivery tool.
MIDI is fully there for those that want to get into audio.

I love the stability and extremely "light" nature of the software (ie small install) - and the stability of the software is vital. I think it's a great idea to look at a different app for addressing audio. Keep resolume to it's stripped down, fully focussed, V8 kick-ass Vj tool that it is!!

big props to Bart and Ed!

I think it will be sad not to have even a little audio function in Resolume. I have to admit I've been looking forward to this for quiet some time... but not needed it so much that I go out and look for it in a different app.

Maybe an alternative would be an audio sampling programme, with a similar interface to resolume that can be controlled with hubi's? (I've been doing some experiments with autopilot, but without much success!!)

I do understand your point (and a random audio thing sounds fun).

"-to can load a audio-video clip in the deck. so to can have (remember coldcut vjamm) an audio out from a videoclip. the audio out from resolume can go into the dj mixer who can open the audio from the video in resolume. i find the audio out from resolume even more interesting than the audio in for bpm sinchronization. cause one of the funny things to reach in a live is to get the bit "manually"."

I'm totaly agree. Please give me some sound so I can play with the disc guy close to me.

PS : escuse my english.
