Projection mapping onto numerous duplicate slices

Post by teaker »

I am in the process of creating a new composition and am looking for advice regarding the best way to map the inputs and outputs.

I have five star-like shapes that will be set across the back of the stage for projection mapping.

The five stars shapes (labelled "A" through "E") each consist of seven hexagon slices. So, in total, I have have 35 hexagon slices (A-1 through A-7 for the first star, B-1 through B-7 for the second star, etc.).
At times I will want each star to be projecting the same clip. At other times I will want each star to project different clips (or, for example, I would like each star to be a different solid color). Also, I would like to maintain separate hexagons within each star in order to use the slice transform effect (like shown in the third image below)

Is this the best way to go about this? I feel like I am overly-complicating this. Thanks in advance!

Advanced Output:

Individual hexagons:
