With the layer router, you can actually build several different "sub" comps in the same space and use the layer to slice feature in advanced output to use your layer router sub-comps.
All you have to do is either insert a black-out layer between the "sub comps" or have the layer that's above a layer router be set at 100% opacity (that option uses fewer layers). If you use the 100% opacity approach, there always needs to be a clip loaded for that to work so if you have empty clips on that layer, you can always use a solid color clip set to black. BTW, it would actually be great to have a black-out layer option in the menu
I haven't done any testing on whether having two comps stacked that way (more layers) is less taxing on the system than having to double up a comp size (more pixels). Joris , any insight?

I would say the two extra black solids are considerably less taxing than doubling up the comp. But your guess is as good as mine on this, Oaktown.
