As far as I understand the Intel HD4000 graphics chip in newer CPUs can decode h.264 mp4 files without putting any stress on system. Why not add mp4 playback for users with i* series cpus?

I'd be interested to read that information. As far as I know, any MPEG4 based decoding still requires the CPU to flip its wig trying to piece together the full frame information.

It's entirely likely that the strain will be relatively small on a powerful CPU, but we can't go around making special builds for certain hardware models. It's already enough hassle to keep check of the PC and Mac builds.

BTW, you can already play back an .mp4 file by changing its extension to .mov. In the end an .mp4 file is just a quicktime container with h264 encoding anyway.

h264 was designed from the ground up to be a delivery format, not a production format. Regardless of "hardware decoding" ability, I would advise against using this codec for VJing.
