OSX - remove unused applications for resolume

Hi...as i have a gig coming up soon, and am playing with resolume and quartz quite a lot, i realized my IMAC (late 2009) is ok for the job but not as fast as id' hope... so i was thinking about this:

Just to speed up everything a little bit i was thinking of creating a new account on the mac where i'd remove all the startup items (f.ex. growl, creative cloud updater, tvshows app, time machine, etc... that are always running in the background and (i suppose) take up some ram and therefore performance.

As i created my new account i was faced with not being able to browse the folders on my other account and move my resolume stuff over (frustration).... so i was thinking of switching off stuff manually in my current account... but have no idea how to do this, or if it even makes sense.

Does anybody have prior experience with this and could point me in the right direction of doing it right !?

thanks.
