SEMPTE OR MTC

I'm a bit lost on functionality of Resolume & Sempte. I'm very interested in syncing video clips as well as DMX in my mix sets. I purchased Arena because of the SEMPTE feature but not certain how to get a sempte signal to Resolume.
Would I need addition software or hardware device to receive time code and assign it to a Sempte input of Resolume. I saw the video post with Armin Van Burren as he uses Usb drives for his music. This topic to me does not go into enough detail to get this type of operation going. Your thoughts on this.

Ever since the Armin video, people seem to think SMPTE is some new protocol requiring some new piece of hardware.

SMPTE has been around forever, and it's simply an audio signal.

It sounds very nasty, it's a series of bleeps and tones, where each frequency stands for a certain time. Resolume then uses these bleeps and tones to determine where the video playhead of a playing clip should be.

As far as protocols go, it's basic as bricks and just the minijack line-in port of your laptop suffices to capture it.
