Raid, stirpe or mirror

Post by seex »

I just bought a shutlle sb819, and im going to make a real fast machine to atempt vj-ing in 800x600 resolution. At the moment i have a P4 3.2 ghz HT 512 of ram and a g-force 6600. Im waiting for two WD 74gb 10.000 rpm discs to be delivered. Im going to Raid them but since there are a few options on how to do this im wondering if someone has experience with this.

So the first think i can do is set:

Raid0 stripe or
Raid1 mirror

Then i have the option to choose the stripe size:

4KB: For specialized uasage models requiring 4KB size
8KB: For specialized uasage models requiring 8KB size
16KB: for best sequential transfers
32KB: good seqential transfers
64KB: good general purpose strip size
128KB Best performance for most desktops and workstations

Im bouilding this computer for resolume video performance only, if anyone has a sugestion on how to configure the raid id be realy gratefull.

Thanks!

You're definately going to want to use RAID 0 stripe. Mirror writes duplicate information to both drives for backup purposes, where striping is meant for performance. I have my raid set up in 64kb sectors, but I assume that 128 would probly be even better. I've been playing with hard drives and configuring them for resolume for a while and raid 0 striping is by far the fastest way i have found.

Thanks for the info, you saved me a lot of time experimenting with HD configuration.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the larger your stripe setting the better for video work. I have no idea where but I kinda rember it. Also is RAID worth your while? I mean I plan to put some serious cash on my box but is that needed?
Thanks.

Oh yeah I have also read anything over 7500 rpm does'nt really matter for HD's.

Im planing to use this box for resolume performance mainley, and as far as i know there are two things that matter the cpu and the HD. Im running the box with a 7200 maxtor at the moment, and whenever i get a perfromance drop i can also hera the HD rumble. So i hope raid takes care of that.

Im projecting 640x480 clips processed at 640x480 and streched to my display resolution 720x576 ish, often i use qite long clips up to three minutes.

Striping does significantly improve hard drive performance in resolume. I've played with this a lot now. I'd give it %30-%50 better and smoother playback with striping. Also, I do have a 10,000 rpm hard drive, and it does out perform the 7200 drives. I can smoothly scratch from beginning to end a 12 minute uncompressed dv file on the 10,000 rpm, but i show some choppiness and frame loss on the 7,200rpm.

My ideal setup, which i hope will happen soon, would be to have two 10,000 rpm sata 150 drives set up in a striping array (Raid 0) I drool thinking about it....
