framerate issues

Hi,
i'm using resolume for a while now on my lappie, but if I use some effects (like colour warp), or movies that are bigger then about 10-15 mb the framerate clearly drops.
I'm not a big hardware guru but I have some ideas of what it can be.
1. Maybe my HD is not fast enough ? if I use an external 7200 rpm + firewire HD , will that help ?
2. codecs ? I use cinepak, rendered at 400x300, should be ok right ?
3. pc is just not fast enough - don't think so , its an 2200 processor with 512 mb ram and an ati radeon 9600 i guess...
ram might be an issue, but can't really do anything about that I guess
I saw the other thread, about booting only with resolume, and actually that might help some more I guess, gonna try that soon.
and also the resolution sometimes seems a bit of a problem, I usually use 640x480, scale to 800x600 , any higher seems to give framerate issues
thx for any feedback on this
