Extremely slow?

Howdy all. I just licensed & installed Resolume Avenue 4.1.7 yesterday on a 4GB mid-2009 Macbook Pro. I have been using Isadora for several years on VJ gigs and decided to switch as I've gotten tired of it crashing almost every time I use it. I have several thousand jpg images and several hundred video clips in Isadora processed with a variety of fx.
I created a new Avenue composition, loaded maybe 100 jpg images into a layer to start getting a feel for the workflow and, when I tried to then Open the example comp I got the spinning beach ball of death for several minutes, during which time Activity monitor showed Avenue using 75-100% of the processor. It eventually opened the example comp and things seemed ok. Only other app open at the time was Chrome with 1 gmail window, very little if anything in the background, and I had just restarted the machine. There is obviously something wrong someplace, as I cant imagine this is expected behavior for such widely used software. I need Avenue to be able to handle all my media; anyone have tips for a newbie before I get really depressed about my investment? Thanks.
