Audio gain and other audio settings

I've experienced this idiosyncrasy for some time but given that it's a once per session thing I didn't have the impetus to report it until the imminence of 4.2.
Consistently on Windows 7 audio gain set in preferences is not applied until the preferences dialogue is opened. No need to change anything or even access the audio section - just open preferences and the gain is applied. A small issue but I haven't seen any other reports of it.
There is an even less frequent (set of?) issues that periodically require the deleting of config.xml. This work-around seems to be the magic solution to a number of things (BPM choking for instance which has already been reported), but I want to report the loss of audio settings in preferences which can't be restored until config.xml is recreated. This suggests that the config file is becoming partially unusable after a time or some action and (from my experience) usually something to do with audio. Again, not a big issue when one knows the work-around but perhaps it might make it into 4.2
