Projection Mapping Questions

Hello Resolume Community!
A friend of mine and me are introducing ourselves to the Projection Mapping world with Resolume. We have already cover the basics of it, like Advance Output transformation, Responsive video effects, layers, etc. following a lot of Resolume tutorials. Regardless of this, we have stumble upon a lack of resources to study advance mapping, this is why I appeal to you guys, hoping I can become an active member of this community.

I was watching this video https://vimeo.com/18402677 and Im really puzzled about reproducing some of the effects in that performance, and therefore I have some questions which i hope i can get some guidance from you.

From minute 3:00 I can infer that this guy is making a mask of the edges using photoshop to use in resolume, personally i thought that assigning slides for each "face" of the structure was better, like this https://www.flickr.com/photos/smallfly/ ... 84942@N07/. What's the difference between this two approaches?

Secondly, in the time 5:12 in the video when the performance starts i can see that there is this kind of wave effect, where one pyramid is lighten up, and then the nears will follow creating this visual effect. I think, most of the performance is being created live, so can you give me some guidance on how to reproduce a similar effect with live tools that resolume provides?

Thank you very much!

hey and welcome,
(if he use resolume at all Edit: he run modul8)

in my head its this way:

He set up the Stage & the Projector, and then use the projector and his laptop to create a mask ( or the outlines) of his final output.
Then he uses this outlines to transport them into after effects or Cinema 4D and then create all the animations you see later in the Video. The animation in min 5 ,in my eyes, is as well prerenderd and not live.
What he does live is just fire the clips he want or maybe change couler / ad some strobe and stuff

If I´m right then he uses not more then 1 Slice becouse he made the Visuals after the rest.

Its very rar that you have enough time between set up the stage / Object and run the show but when you have you can do ... things :geek:

ohh look what i found ;)

So, you have to create a mask first (outline of the structure) and then animate that mask in any software you like, and then use it as a mask layout over the actual content you are reproducing in any other lay out, right?

I think you are mixing to things:

1. masking : create a layout with transparent and non transperent parts (depending on the object you are projecting on) and then just show the clip you want through that mask ( only the transparent parts)

2. generate Content using some kind of layout / outlines of the object

And from what i saw in the video you posted the 2. option is used here. In the Show he dont use any mask or stuff becouse he have the special Content just for this kind of setup.

Thank you very much for your guidance! Anyone else would argue that this may be live content? Thank you!

The first video you link to is definitely not live. You can see the artist mapping out the structure in Illustrator during a few shots.

The project linked to on Flickr looks realtime, at least the description says it's made in OpenFrameworks. To make something like that in oF, you can expect to spend more than 14 days ;)
