It will be good to have an ability to see test card, when slice source is set to "layer #".
Now I need to made my mapping with composition as input, and then set it to layer. Maybe it's good to have different test cards for each layer, for example, write layer number/name on it.

I would actually love the ability to have a test card that is generated based on each slice's pixel size but that might be asking much!

In the meantime, you can take a snapshot of the test card, use that in your different layers creating one column of test cards. It doesn't work as well as the actual test card because the snapshot of the test card gets rendered with transparency instead of the light grey but if you could always photoshop the background back in if you really need it.
