Thunderbolt input?

I've got an Asus Rog G751JY-DH72X laptop which has a Thunderbolt port on it. I was wondering if it is possible to use this to input from a Microsoft Surface, which has a mini Display Port. From what I understand, Thunderbolt is a bi-directional connection. I was hoping to use the Surface as an input source in Resolume and not have to buy and additional capture device. Just wondering if anyone has tried this before I order some cables to see if it works? Thanks!

This won't work the way you are planning. You def need a capture device if you want the output from a mini display port.
If you are on a low budget I would look at using TCP Spout, all you need is a network cable and playback that can send to spout(or syphon)

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll start looking into getting a capture device.

I'm surprised your Asus Rog G751JY-DH72X has a thunderbolt port. Are you sure you don't just have a miniDP output? They look the same but are quite different.
Only the PCIe part of the Thunderbolt cable is bi-directional but DisplayPort is still directional and work as an output. So even if your laptop had Thunderbolt, you'd still have to have a PCIe card (or Thunderbolt dock & adapter) to capture content:

Yup. It comes with Thunderbolt. That was one of the main reasons I bought it. I use it to connect to my old Firewire soundcard with a Thunderbolt to 9 pin Firewire adapter and 9-6 pin cable.

Can confirm using thunderbolt capture devices on Asus laptops.
