HELP! Control other software with Arena

I'm going nuts trying to make Resolume as a controller of a DMX controller software (now I trying with Freestyler).
My big plan is: A live rock band is playing and I manually trigger clips and effects in Arena. Meanwhile Freestyler is running, rgb moving heads, laser and dmx fog machine are connected via usb dongle. The show setup is ready the only problem is that I can't trigger both the cues in Freestyler and the clips in Resolume the same time. :? So I need to link these via artnet/osc/smpte/midi or god knows how??
So I ask your help how to control Freestyler with Resolume or tell me please how does the professionals sync the DMX lights with the video and the live music?

how about using an external/virtual midi controller/sequencer to trigger both arena and Freestyler.
Or use Freestyler to trigger Arena via DMX.

Thans for the tips ravensc.
You mean for example Ableton?
Is that possible to trigger Freestyler via Arena instead?

I'm not sure if resolume can be the master in a midi setup.

I'm not sure if resolume can be the master in a midi setup.
Every control that has a Midi shortcut assigned to it, will output its assigned Midi message to all active Midi outputs, not just the port it came from.

So theoretically, you could use Resolume forward Midi messages coming from a controller to another virtual Midi port. You could even create Midi shortcuts for certain controls manually. These Midi shortcuts will then output their message when you move the control with the mouse.

This is all next level tinkerer stuff, btw, and makes things needlessly complex. I agree with Ravensc that it would be much simpler to use Freestyler to control Resolume via DMX. That's how professionals do it (except that a real professional LJ would use a regular console like an MA or Hog, but you get my point).
