So I've worked as a lighting guy doing DMX for a bit now, I understand the basics of color mixing and Ive done some projection work via a program called magic.

I did a show the other night with Ian Alvarez as he was doing a show for seven lions here in California, I was working audio that night and backlining but damn, I couldn't keep my eye off his set up, shit was soooo sick!

So i noticed several things, he was using a router, everything was done via cat5/rj45 he had to projectors and a led system.

He ran everything based on what I saw, via lan.

I messaged him via facebook but im sure he's busy.

So here's the question, I have a short throw that i want to put behind the DJ, I want to be able to have my lighting/visual console at FOH, not to the left of the DJ because im using a VGA connection.

Now heres the other part, I've seen all the VGA to Cat5 converters, triple taps, that type of stuff, Im wondering if with the media server that this is not needed, ie I cant just go from the cat5 on my mac to a router to the IP based units ie NEC projecter.

Chances are he was using HD base T. With the right sender receiver, you can go as far as 330 feet using CAT6a cables and most projectors these days can receive HD base T. Panasonic calls it PJ link but it's the same standard which I use all the time.

Over HD base T, you can send 4K resolution with no latency, eight channels of audio, RS-232, infrared and power.

So Ian is a tad busy these days but hilariously enough I designed the signal flow and spent a week doing preproduction with him as part of the Beama visuals team.

We even spent quite abit of time together doing previz with a media server called D3. Which really works well with Resolume.

So i don't know if anything has changed and i'll be explaining things as from when the tour left and the fact he hasn't called me about issues along the whole tour.

So the tour uses 2x20K barcos and Beama visuals own branded LED wall. The data to the wall is sent from processors at FOH, but takes DVI, the cat5 you see to the projectors is just for alignment and doesn't run video data, we actually use SDI for all video to the projectors but i bet everything to the projectors is loomed together.

So right now you can't just send video from your network port, in the future NDI will totally allow that but for the moment 95% of media servers send out DVI/VGA/SDI and then it gets converted.

Sorry to dash your hopes, your gonna have to get some cat5 vga converter boxes.
