Hi I don't know how to word this in a search query so I do apologize if this has been asked, I've looked at tutorials on masks but none of them get me the result I need.

I am looking to play a constant background video that is masked by animated triangles that reveal that said video. They are triggered piano style by a midi keyboard that plays those individual mask animations clips. My problem is that when the key is not played the BG video is revealed. I have tried using layer routers but I guess I'm not using them correctly.

Does anyone know how I could make it so that whenever the note is not being played, the background stays black and then the note is played the video layer and the mask layer get revealed?

you could:
turn down the layer1 opacitiy where your background video runs,
add layer routers in layer 2 input set to layer 1 input opacity unchecked.
add your mask videos to layer 3 set layer blend to 50Mask, turn opacity all the way up.
assign the same midi note to a layer router and a mask video, set trigger style for these clips/routers to piano mode.
now when you press a key both a mask video and a layer router will launch and on release both should eject.

Hey thank you very much for your response, I may be doing something wrong because the image only appears when I depress the note.

when you disable the masking layer (3) and trigger your layer1 clip and the layer router you should see your clip playing.

I cannot for the life of me make this work. I think for now i'm going to merge the mask and video BGs into single clips and use tint filters and effects to give them a different feel throughout the show. Thank you for helping me tho!

what I'm doing with key mapping in this video - assigning the same to both clips - is what you'd do with midi mapping.
When I press my A key both the layer router and the masking video starts to play, and when I release both stop.

Hey thank you so much for posting that video and sorry for the long pause, I finally have time to get back to this project. I got it working but between key presses the whole screen flashes the layer 1 footage. But I think it may look cool that way. Thank you again for your help!

Yeah it shouldn't flash if your transition is 0 and the clips are set to trigger normally.
Also my masks are DVX3 black footage with alpha where I want to see the image behind the mask. Then using multiply blend type on the layer.

I made mine in SWF to try and not have too many big files, maybe that's why it's happening.
