I have turned both midi in and out on. I get a little bit of function it moves a slider up or down by one pixel but only by pixel. it wont move up or down any farther after that.

Sounds like those knobs are sending relative midi values.

After you assign the midi shortcut, in the bottom left of the interface, change the mode from Absolute to Relative.
Which mode is right for you (0-127 or 63-65), depends on your controller.
