I'm a VJ but I mostly work in Max/MSP/Jitter. That comes with some pros and cons. I made the mistake of assuming I could/should build my own custom VJ tool in Max for a new project. I realize now it's a mess and very complicated. So I'm scrambling and looking at VJ tools like Resolume.

My design goal is simple: have three videos play simultanesouly. Each cropped according to specific needs. Three videos next to each other. The master video will also be cropped to specific needs.

I would then like the ability of trigger videos with MIDI, etc. I've attached a boring mockup of this video placement. Can Resolume help me set this up? Is this considered complex within the context of the software?

Resolume can do the job very easily:

You need three layers.
Layer 01 will play all videos on the left side;
Layer 02 will play all videos centered;
Layer 03 will play all videos on the right side;
So, organize all videos in your deck, placing them side to side on their respective layer.
In advanced output (input selection) you will need three slices as well. Each slice must be set to display only one and the respective layer content: 01 to layer01; 02 to layer 02; 03 to layer 03.
All slices should have the same size, considering you have equal divisions, and never mind if they are overlapping at tis moment, considering you did as I described above.
In advanced output (output transformation) move each slice to match each desired position.
Back to Resolume's main screen, select one video on each layer and watch the results.

IMPORTANT: You will find out that some videos might not be cropped in the position you like the most. Simply go to the desired clip properties and move the video "x axis" so you can match the crop for that specific video.

Now for the master video:
Create a 4th layer on top of the previous three. Create more 03 slices and set them all to display layer 04 content only.
Select areas to crop and reposition the slices as you did before. Keep in mind that this video will allways overlap the others.

MIDI Trigering
Depending on your midi device, you can easily map it and make Resolume to play each desired video according to the mapped key in your device.
