Hi guys,

I’m new to Resolume and I have a couple questions that I can’t find the answers to. I am programming a show that will go with 90mn of live djing and each song played will have it’s own clip.
I want to have clips played out in a timeline manner on one layer (so it follow the course of the music). The clips are made to the length of each song and I want to trigger the videos with a midi pad. So far I figured i could put each clip in order on a layer and put the layer on autopilot to go to the next clip when the previous one reaches the end.

I have two outputs (2 screens) and I would like to have each column assigned to a song. So on layer 1 (column 1) have the clips for the main screen on stage (A), on layer 2 (column 1) the fxs that will be applied to this video (when midi triggered or automatically) and on layer 3 (column 1) have another clip that will be sent to another screen (B) at the same time that than the clip on layer 1. I will then want to find a way to have the clip on layer 1 be played on screen (A) and screen (B) simultaneously and choose (with a midi toggle) if the clip on layer 1 goes to screen (B) or not.

Now when I place the clips next to each other and put the layer on autopilot i notice a couple problems

1. The transition between clips is not flawless. There’s a very short “pause” with a black screen when switching from one clip to the next one. Is there a way around this?
I could make a 90mn long clip and separate it with point cues but I’m not sure Resolume will like this. I’d rather have one clip per song anyways and have cue points in each clip to “resync” the video if need be).

2. Some clips skip some frames or don’t loop perfectly (even though the video runs perfectly on other players). Is this a known problem?

3. Is there a way to have autopilot on the columns or trigger next/prev with midi (I’ve found the “secret >” but haven’t been able to map it properly)?

4. Can I “link” clips so when the clip on layer 1 in column 1 starts, the clip on layer 3 in column 1 starts at the same time ? Playing a whole column works if I can have columns on autopilot…

5. Do Fxs use ressources when they’re not active? ie does it matter if i put 10 fxs on a clip but only use one? Do the fxs on clips that are not playing use ressource?

6. When I apply an fx directly on a clip, is there a way to copy and paste it to another clip?

7. Resolume freezes pretty much every time I quit it. Do anyone have the same issue?

All my clips are compressed in VX3 with compressor
I am using the free version of Arena 6.0.7 on a MacBook Pro 201 Retina Late 2013 - 2.8

Could you make a recording of this happening?

2. again please create a recording of this, also you could send us the files that don't play correctly.

3, auto pilot only works in single layers. That's quite different form midi mapping the next column button hava a look at our support page on how to create midi shortcut maps here: https://resolume.com/support/en/midi-shortcuts

5. effects don't use much resources when they are bypassed or are on clips or layers that are not playing.

6. yes, you can either copy the clip and right click - paste effects on the new clip or use effect presets to load a preset directly on a new clip

Are you using a retina macbook with dedicated graphics?
What resolution are you running your composition and clips at?

ok, thank you for the link, i'll look to see if there is way for me to do what i want it to do. I basically want a clip to trigger another one going to a different screen at the same time...

what would be another way to achieve what I want to do? Maybe I'm not thinking the right way..?

So I could potentially have 10 effects on each 70 clips and not worry about ressource usage as long as they're not midi triggered?

Yes it's a retina macbook pro 13 inch late 2013 with intel Iris 1536 and I only have installed El Capitan and Resolume Arena 6

What resolution are you running your composition and clips at?
1920x1080

That could be the source of your issues there.
The 13" Intel Iris is not a very powerful machine.
You could gain some performance by changing the composition resolutions to 1280x720 or even lower.
You can switch on an FPS meter in Output menu to show you how Resolume is doing fps wise.

Doubling the composition width and mapping Slices in the advanced output for your screen outputs from the left and right side of your compositions, you could use Slice Transform effects with the individual slices placed to the clips directly.
But this would have a big performance impact on your 13" macbook.

So I found how to assign a rotary midi knob to go from a clip to another so by doing this on multiple layers it plays all the clips in column 1 at the same time, same for column 2 etc. Somehow it won't let me set another type of midi control (i would like to assign a fwd and back button to be more precise than a rotary knob). Is there a way to make this work?

In the Advanced output settings I set my first screen to display layer 1 only and screen 2 to display layer 2 only.
Now I'd like to have screen 2 display layer 1 sometimes but not always. Should I create a copy of layer 1 and add a midi on/off toggle or is there a better way to do this?

I understand this MBP isn't super powerfull but before jumping in and buying a super expensive laptop dedicated to this I wanted to test try my ideas and I thought that playing with a few clips wouldn't be an issue especially as I only play one at a time and barely have any fxs...

After switching the FPS meter on it reads 55/50. Not sure if this is good or not?

you can use the next clip button on the layer:
You need to have Show Transition controls in View menu enabled for these to show.

Why is this better? isn't it going to make it processor heavy as you said before?

The higher it is the better.
25-30 fps is still looking fluid to the eye, so if you're getting below that you'll start to notice.

Well I'm at 50/55 and it's not fluid. Hopefully it will be with a better computer.
I'm looking at the ones I've attached, what do you think (i'll only be running 3/4 layers max) ?

I still see a half second black screen when jumping form a clip to another. Will this disappeared with better computer performance or is this the way Resolume is built?

Yes it will, but if you want to play the same layer on different outputs at different times, setting slice inputs to layers won't work for that.

With DXV and a more powerful computer and video card you shouldn't see a half second delay before you see the clip playing.
