Avenue 6 crashes when output to fullscreen display 2

I am currently using Resolume Avenue 6 to run my bands visuals in sync with our backing tracks.

Arena loads fine and laptop is connected to external screen or projector via HDMI or VGA. After selecting 'Output Fullscreen Display 2', the toolbar at the top starts flashing, usually on both screens and then I get the dreaded 'spinning wheel of death'. I might add, this does not happen all time, only occasionally, and seems to fix itself once I restart my computer.

I feel like this has happened since the last update (6.0.7), but that might be more coincidence. I know my computer is the minimum spec and not the best suited, but I am only running 2 layers (DXV video on one, wav audio on the other) and it does usually work perfectly fine most of the time!

Is this just a computer spec issue? or do other people have the same intermittent problem? Perhaps theres a setting or a workflow procedure when connecting screens/loading resolume etc that could reduce the probability of this happening? Any thoughts would be welcome!

My composition is 25 FPS, 1920 x 1080, 16bpc

Macbook Pro Retina i5 (13 inch, late 2015) hdmi or VGA video out + audio out via Radial USB DI
OSX El Capitan 10.11.6

Looks like OSX won't let Resolume output be on top of the menu bar.

Could you check this by installing an older version?
Go to our download page, and scroll down.
You'll find a "Select Version..." combobox, which has all previous releases.
Select the one you'd like and your download should start.

Try toggling the Displays have separate spaces option in the System preferences / Mission control if setting it differently solves the issue.
You could also try to click on the output texture on your secondary monitor to specifically select it's window.

You could also try to use the Advanced output to send a simple full screen slice to your display 2.

Do you have any desktop management apps installed?

BTW, You'd get much better fps running a 8bpc composition instead of 16bpc, especially without dedicated graphics.

I have changed it to 8bpc as you suggested.

It happened again last weekend at a gig, and the only way for it to work was to have the projector connected when restarting the computer. This is not all the time but now 50% of time, it does not like it if the projector is plugged in after boot up. Getting a bit nervous now as I have an important show at the Southbank Centre next month and don't want it to happen there.

Im looking at my mission control and all 4 boxes are ticked - is that correct? Have unchecked and rechecked displays have separate spaces as you suggested.

What do you mean by output texture?

Yes, advanced output works using a slice, but then again its hard to force this problem to happen as it doesn't happen all the time, and once it does, then its wheel of death and you can't do anything anyway. But i will try it if my 'turn off and on again' method stops working.

Will try downloading the previous version and to try and test it with different screens / projectors at home to see if the error happens.

and yes I do have desktop management apps running but it usually perfectly fine, nothing really abnormal and I always make sure I have nothing else running.

Is this anything to do with me using WAV files and long MOV files (with the DXV codec)? By long i mean between 3 - 6 minutes long.

Nothing abnormal except some occasional flickering right ? ;)
Which program are you using for this?
Have you tried to disable or uninstall it?

Switching off displays have separate spaces should disable the OSX menu bar on the secondary display, so it shouldn't flash up.
A log out and log in is necessary for it to activate, have you done that?

The output window that's showing on your projector.

Just wanted to says since toggling 'Displays have separate spaces' i have not experienced the problem again. Admittedly I like access to the dock/osx menu bar on my second screen when working at home, but its not a massive problem to keep turning it on and off when needed for live performances. Thanks for your help @Zoltán.
