Preserve colour data for mask

I'm trying to do what in Photoshop would be a clipping mask. Make Layer 2 only show where Layer 1 alpha >0. If I try to just mask Layer 2 to one layer below all the colour data gets discarded and it seems only the luminosity of Layer 2 gets passed on.

I finally got what I wanted, but I don't fully understand why it works.
Starting from the bottom I have my first clip. Above that is my mask generator with the blend mode set to 50 Mask. Make sure your generator is outputting white, since luma will be alpha in the final product. It's also important that you have an effect that gives your generator a black background. I used Flip.
Above that is your second clip, and above that is a video router from the mask generator with an Invert RGB effect on it, set to Mask 50.
This where I start to lose the plot a little bit. The layers that you want to appear in the black region(s) of your original mask have to be set to a Bus for the effect to work.
