Avi-s are not supported on Mac.
Are you switching from a PC?

It seems something changed with Mojave.
I see the same on my mojave machine, with Avenue 3.
What I can recommend at this point would be to use an earlier OSX version with Avenue 3. Though the avi files I have still display the X and I can't load them in El-capitan for example.
If the avi files also worked for you with a specific osx version, I'd recommend to stick with that, but as far as I know avi support is very bad on OSX in general, so I kinda doubt they played at all.
If they did not play, then you could also upgrade to Avenue 6 with keeping Mojave. That would fix the DXV3 support.

We shipped the demo footage for Avenue 3 in what I think was PhotoJpeg AVIs. At the time, DXV was just a little babbie, and these AVIs had a better performance/size ratio.
Ever since Mavericks, Apple has been getting rid of old 32 bit Quicktime, which is the playback engine that Avenue 3 used for playback. Any OSX versions later than that will be increasingly problematic when it comes to backwards compatibility.
I'm not sure what codec those .mov files from your second post are in, or what version of Quicktime Player they do play in, but that's where I'd start looking for answers.
