How does universe spanning work with partly unused universes?

Quick Question on Universe Spanning:
So there are 16 strips of 5m / 30 density LEDs in my setup. I decided to sacrifice some address space (12%) in order to get a clear and modular setup, for I may move things around depending on the visual quality I need. Therefore, the controllers (madrix nebula) are set to a universe size of 450 addresses: Each strip has it´s own DMX universe that way:
From left to right: Strips 0-15 (yeah I stick to the artnet convention
)
strips 0-3 = Controller A, port 1, 450 addresses in universes 0, 1, 2, 3
4-7 = Controller A, port 2
8-11 = Controller B, port 1
12-15 = Controller B, port 2
How does universe spanning work with such a setup? Or does it assume full 512 addresses universes? Dummy devices to make up for the unused addresses (454-512)?
