I have set "ignore column trigger" on a clip (a PNG file) and when I manually activate another column, that clip gets cleared; however, when I set that option on the layer, and set the clip option back to "layer determined", it works as expected....why ?

Because the clip you set to Ignore column trigger will ignore column launches.
Empty or other clips which are not set to ignore column trigger, will activate on column trigger, so they clear the playing clip in the layer.
