DXV video dropping frames exactly every 30 seconds

I been having a problem with longer videos (+20 min). I convert them to DXV with Alley, and every 30 seconds, almost exactly, it drops frames to almost half the frame rate.

I use a 2018 MacBook Pro 15" - i7 2.6GHz - 16GB RAM - Radeon 560X 4GB VRAM

I have the files on an external SSD Samsung T7 1050 MB/s, and doing some troubleshooting it appears to be the problem, because on the internal drive it works fine.

I use other shorter videos on the drive that work fine. Even with a lot of effects and layers. But specifically on longer videos I been having this problem.

Any suggestion to work it around?
is there a recommended format for the drive? right now is in ExFAT

Thanks for any help you could bring!

Hi !
I am struggling right now with exactly the same problem. About every 30 seconds on average.
All the other components are no problems, CPU or GPU are far from overloaded.
My disk is also in ExFat, so i am in the process of transferring the huge amount of Data to reformat in APFS and use a dedicated OSX Install directly on the external SSD.
I will let you know if that solves the problem.

Best

Hope this can help

Nice elcyano! Thanks for the tip.

I was thinking on trying that today, I was between APFS or Extended Journaled.

I'll try APFS and let you know!

Apparently is working fine now with APFS, I need to test it a bit more, but even in iStats disk monitor I can see the difference, now Arena is reading at 400MB/s; in ExFAT it was between 30-40MB/s and I could see the hiccup every 30 seconds.

I would like to know what is causing this behavior in macOS with ExFAT external disk. A friend tested my drive with a windows machine and the same file worked fine.
I don't know if there is a difference in the reading behavior of Arena from external drives. Both formats are supposed to support the reading speeds. Obviously APFS is more optimized for macOS, but I still can't understand it, or probably is just an Arena bug. Lets see if someone else has some more insight.

Anyways thanks a lot for your help elcyano!

You're welcome.
ExFat is a pretty old Windows Format, so maybe it retained some of the limitations of FAT32.

But anyway, glad i could help.
