Displace blend mode only works when layer is 25% on

Post by subset »

Hi there!

I thought I'd ask about something that has puzzled me for a while. Whenever I use the displace blend mode on a layer, it only has an effect on the layer beneath it if I set it to about 25% visibility. Anything above that, and the 'blend mode layer' works just like 'add' – it just appears on top of the layer below. This means that whenever I use the displace blend mode, I have to clearly label it "DISPLACE" in my composition, so I can remember to not turn it fully on.

I would've thought that perhaps setting the opacity of the clip to 25% would do the same job, but alas, this does not work. (It would've been nice to be able to animate the effect with the opacity parameter).

Have I misunderstood how the displace blend mode works?

Where do you have the Displace blend selected?

@zoltan – I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

The displace effect is on top (in order to affect the layers below it). In the example in my image, the "base layer" is on layer 1, while the "displace layer" (which has to be set to 25% to work) is on layer 2.

Ah, you mean the effect clip.

The ADD on the layer is working from 0-50% by gradually adding the layer2 to the layer below, then from 50%-100% it slowly turns into an Alpha blend.
That will look different.

The layer blend is a different pass, than the clip or effect opacity, so they are not interchangeable with ADD blend,
They would be doing basically the same if you select Alpha as your layer blend:

Ah, that's too bad. It would've been more flexible if I could make a single clip have a particular blend mode, instead of needing to make the entire layer have that blend mode.

But thank you for the info – I learned something today!

Hmm.... now I'm confused. I've tried setting the layer blend mode to 'displace' and that doesn't work either. So which combination of layer blend modes and clip blend modes do I need to select to make 'displace' work when the clip is set to 100%? Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding something, and a clip with 'displace' can never work this way?

Yes, displace blend at 100% layer opacity is alpha too.
The 50something blends are 0-100% range and not going to alpha abve 50%.
