Saving a clip as a source/effect causes the wire watermark to appear

I made a clip with a stack of fx to do a pretty cool thing, but if I try to save that clip as a "new source" or "new effect" it gets saved as a Wire preset. This causes the Wire watermark to pop up, and it overwrites the original clip, replacing it with the new wire preset, and burying the individual effect control drop dows. If I hadn't hit undo just now, I would have locked myself out of an entire day of work! Why are clip presets getting saved this way? What happened before wire? Were there no user presets for clips?!
I cannot name a single other piece of software where reloading a user preset is paywalled behind an even more expensive piece of software. I am absolutely not paying another EUR399 to access presets I just made myself. Maybe I'll want to program stuff in Wire at a later date, but I'm not buying it just for this!
As a suggestion, saved source/effects should could remain as Avenue clips with nested effects, until I click "Edit in Wire". That way, if I want the tools in Wire, I can pay for it. If I don't, I can still use my clip as is.
Other than that, is there any other way to save clip presets for ready access? I know I can import a whole deck from another composition, meaning I'm effectively using comps and decks as massive preset libraries, but that require more clicks. How else do people move clips between compositions?
