Resolume Capture card woes

Hey

I've just spent the better part of a week and purchased 2 capture cards trying to get capture working properly in resolume.. and am yet to get it right. :(

Resolume has pretty poor capture card support, I've been trawling through the forums and there are many many people who have been having problems with their cards in resolume.

The most common issue we all seem to have is that while the driver options are listed in the sources tab, they cannot be altered. Resolume seems to load the card in its default state. This means that if you are lucky enough to have purchased a card that happens to be compatible with resolume, you had better hope that the default state of the card is the right framerate, resolution and format that you are after, because you're not going to be able to change it. This was the problem with my first card, although it was capable of 720x576, it's default streaming resolution was 320x240. Bummer.
The manual says : "If you need to configure a capture driver, double click the driver in the list and a group of buttons appear in the bottom of the list. The buttons open various options that the driver provides. Some drivers have more options then others. " Its quiet plain to see that this just isn't true for a lot of people.

One potential solution for this was suggested: run a capture program like AMCAP http://noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=video , in the background and use that to change settings on the capture driver which would hopefully carry through into Resolume. You might want to try it, unfortunately it didn't work for me.

The second most common issue is that the card doesn't work, crashes resolume or just displays blank. I realize that with all the different cards out there total compatibility is impossible to achieve, but the basic fact is that resolume, out of a few of other VJ apps and capture programs I tested with both my cards seems to have the most issues. After the incompatibility of my first card I thought I'd give resolume the benefit of the doubt and get another. Although this card seemed to default to 720x576, it displayed blank and eventually crashed resolume, again driver settings could not be altered in resolume. The card worked perfectly in other apps.
The manual says "Resolume can use any capture device available in your computer. A capture device can be a TV-tuner, a webcam, a DV camera through firewire or USB or an analog input like s-video." - uuuuh, that doesnt seem to be the case, I realize Im not using the most expensive cards in the world, but they have all the capabilities, if only they were compatible.

So this seems to be the story: Resolume will only work with some cards and then only some of those will actually function properly. That's fine, although I feel that the manual is a bit misleading in that sense: none of this would be a problem if there was just some kind of reliable info on what cards work and what don't, from the software development people. Really after 2 cards I'm really reluctant to rush out and get another card in the hope that it might work. One of the posts suggested that you should get a card that works with the WDM drivers... I dont know how accurate this is, what I do know is that's its pretty hard to know what drivers the card uses until you purchase it and take it home.

I suppose what I'd really like to know from admin is : what card do you guys recommend? Is there some kind of card or driver set that we should be avoiding? Viewcast Ospery and Hauppauge seem to come up pretty often from people who seem to have got it working. Can anyone recommend an affordable card that they know functions 100%? I would really appreciate any advice anyone can offer on this.
Thanks!

Hi SimStim,
you have some good points we will gladly try to fix.
Resolume tries to match the resolution of the device against the process resolution.
This means that resolume chooses the resolution and that the user can't change it.
We thought that with settings you could ovveride this but indeed as you say most settings does not seem to have any effect. Wich is strange but needs to be fixed.
We will see what we can do about this.

We have tried several capture devices and all seem to work fine for us.
The problem is that we can't test al the devices wich are available.
We never had any problem with webcams or DV-cams (have tried over more then 8 models). We have only two tv-tuner devices (one build into Bart's laptop, dont know the make) and one Pinnacle PCTV.
So i guess we have to get our hands onto a model wich doesn't work to get things fixed.
If you want i can put you up the Beta test list so you can help us get things fixed.
We are working on the release of 2.4 so any help on getting all the bugs out is appreciated.
Just let me know if you are interested by sending me an email : edwin@resolume.com

Cheers
Edwin

I've bought an ADS-Tech Instant TV USB, and it work well with resolume, but just have to select the analogic input before running resolume or you will get the tuner instead of the video in.
But it work fine, and just cost 39.90€ in france ^^
