Need a new video card, mine got fried!!! What to buy?

Hi all,
It seems the video card of my PC (a generic one with some ATI chipset) is fried. I need to buy a new one, but don't know what to get. I use my machine mainly for audio work with ableton live, but I'm more and more into working with video editing for VJ purposes. Off-line editing (a la adobe premiere) as well as some funky real-time work (a la resolume).
What video card (not more than usd150/200) should I get? My main interest is stability and quality/availability of drivers, but if I could also improve my performance it would be cool. What should I look for? What families/brands/models of cards are recommended? I don't have PCI express, so it would have to be AGP, how bad is that? Am I missing too much bandwidth? Would it help having OpenGL acceleration in the card? (http://www.resolume.com/forum/viewthrea ... 42#pid9603)...Do i gain anything at all by getting a higher speced card instead of a cheap one, bearing in mind the kind of usage i have in mind?
For what I've read, ATI cards are good, but their drivers are a bit messy, and I don't want to complicate things. In this forum people have talked good of Nvidia 7800. Finally matrox parhelia, but it's way out of my budget.
I'm messed.
