I'm wondering if it's time to jump to a Top of the line Laptop.

There's new Core 2 duo Lappys coming out very soon.. and maybe even a 4 core lappy early 2007, and with Toshiba making 10 000 rpm HDDS for lappys... i think the time is coming close.

Okay... they probably wont ever be AS fast as a Desktop/shuttle BUT imo i feel the difference is always shrinking.. and with this new technology on the horizon... the difference might be quite acceptable.

I'd like to hear your opinions, especially the power-users of our forum.

Hey there dreamtk. As you well know, i'll stand by the core 2 duo to all ends - I know you saw my dream computer post. You also know my stance on this - i'm a desktop guy. But with new technology, my views do change. For example, I was a hardcore amd enthusiast until my new core 2 duo. And with my new cpu, i am actually able to touch my heatsync and gasp in amazement as it is cool to the touch. Not luke warm, but actually cool! Now that i have seen this, a laptop is not too far out of reach.

10,000 rpm hdd for laptop? i must've missed that release... still, raid support for laptops is rare. Also, usb capture devices just don't cut it - too much delay. I guess what i'm saying is that it's not the computer itself that steers me towards a tower, but the expandability it offers. I need multiple tv cards.

I'll tell you again, core 2 duo is incredible for resolume (and everything else for that matter). And I even agree that the gap is getting smaller, laptops will very soon be just as capable of running resolume. But the addons, raid support, and general expandability for the moment still steers me away.

CLARIFICATION: Core 2 Duo is not Core Duo!! There has been some confusion about this for those not as hardware savvy. A Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz will annhialate a Core Duo 3.2Ghz. Ghz mean nothing anymore, it's about chip architecture. It will also beat an Athlon 64 FX 62 btw...

I know RAID is important to you.

Did u know Toshiba makes a Laptop with 2 raided 10,000 rpm HDDS ? They say they're VERY loud.. but most of us wouldn't care.

Of course they'll never be as expandable as Desktops... especially if you need multiple capture cards...

If however all you need is a firewire port to capture your video through a DFG (video to firewire converter without the lag) with dual video out so you can bring along a small 15" moniter (for dual desktop) and Fast 10,000 rpm HDDS raided... with Latest Core 2 duo support and DDR2 RAM ....It looks like a laptop like this is available right now.

And from what i understand it will blow away my SHUTTLE Intel 478 socket 3.4 ghz CPU atm.

I'm just hanging on for as long as i can.. coz i'm close to cracking and going all out ! lol

The toshiba drive is a sas (as in serial scsi) drive not a sata drive.

So it will not work in any portable...

Esata is our way out!
