new pc - but still running resolume clips slow/freezing

Hey all..
Im pretty new to resolume, and enjoying messing about with it a lot. i have my first ever gig coming up in october, so right now im gathering content, trying to learn about codecs etc and generally swotting.
Have a few queries about resolume if anyone can help. I just got a new pc - dell pentium 4 dual core, 2.8ghz, 1mb RAM, decent graphics card (i think). I assumed that with all this new fresh power id have no trouble. However.. My clips are still running slow in resolume, hanging, PC is grinding away, its not smooth playback, the sliders on the layers are jerky too. Im freaking out thinking ive bought the wrong pc! Could this be the way im encoding my clips? Right now im trying MPEGS, and im using a program called super (because its easy and im no tech whizz) to encode them from my original (and huge) avi files. Would i be better using avi files? Ive tried various codecs for avi, but as yet the quality of the MPEGS have seemed better - avi comes out blocky.
Any help would be really appreciated, im stumbling around in the dark wasting hours trying and testing things, when id like to be getting on with making beautiful clips and learning resolume.
PS please dont tell me to search
- I have spent what feels like years plowing through previous posts
