Convert DVD/CD to any format with less size

Could anyone please tell me which software is the best to use to rip DVD or CD and convert into WMV format in very less size and without affecting the quality of the movie? Please let me know of a good converter which is the best you have tried. It does not matter if it is free or not, I will pay. Your help will be highly appreciated.

Mac or Pc? I assume pc?
Just use a dvd ripper, (for mac: Handbrake, Mac the ripper) and then convert convert the large output file to a file with the size you want (With your favourite encode program (Quicktime Pro, Visualhub).
If you want small files, use DivX, but this compression isn't recommended for VJ use.
H264 is also rather good, only it takes a lot of cpu power to compress/read it.
