How to achieve this mask effect?

I would like to achieve this effect in Resolume:

I've made this mask:

Image

and I can use it in Vegas video to create the effect I want. However, when I drop that bitmap into the Resolume mask folder, and apply it as the layer effect, it is not quite the same. The white parts of the image never become 100% opaque while the dark parts are 100% transparent.

How can I do this?

I would like most of the inset picture to be opaque, while the background fades in at the bottom.

I tried it. it seems that you cant set the layer fader to exactly 50.. its either 49, or 51.

heres a screenshot of what i tried. it seems to work ok though.

Yeah, that's what I was doing (and I noticed the 49 - 51 thing). However, my mask bitmap was a bit off - I hadn't realized it, but the white parts were not all white. (RBG 230,230,230 instead of 255,255,255).

Once I fixed it, your setup yields exactly what I want.

right click the fader on level 2/3 (middle/top) = 50 %
level 1(bottom) = 100%

works elsewhere eg effects params (think it returns them to their default).
