The first time I try to hit the record button, it will record a clip that is about 1/10th of a second long and put it back in the decks, and when I try to load it the short video keeps looping really fast. From then on, the record button is broken. I have never gotten Resolume Avenue to properly record a video.

Yeah they are working on this one and there's a lot of us having problems, but record is working for some people too. Bart or Edwin can explain further, all I can say is if you post up your specks that might be of some help to them.
There are a couple of threads kicking about allready that might provide some pointers also.

The only problems I've currently experienced with recording is the performance hit it can create if applying too many video effects & the fact that it only records up to a about minute at a time - or to a file size limit of around 380 to 400 MB...don't know what factors are involved with this.
Current system:
Phenom X4 2.5 GHz 2GB RAM
Radeon HD 2900 512MB
WinXP Pro SP3 32bit
Quicktime 7.6 Pro
