Clip selection possible as in R2?

Q4.

Now that I'm getting all my nice freshly DXV encoded clips into R3, Im trying to figure out the best way to select them 'live'.

In R2 I used the top switched knobs on my BCR2000 to select the 8 banks, then the laptop keyboard (or now Korg NanoKey) for the clips.

In R3, what I've got is:
Deck selection via the Korg NanoPad (12 pads).
Clip selection from the white keys on the Korg NanoKey (15) and layer selection using a group of the black keys (3-5).

I know I can select a 'column' but this means only the clips in that column.
Now with the clip select keys set, this selects from the currently active row in the clip top panel (usually) into the active layer (selected with another key).
What I want to do, is navigate the clip panel with an external (midi) keyboard - selecting a row in the clip panel, then selecting a clip to go into the active layer panel on the left.
Does this make sense?
That way I can just use the midi controllers for switching decks/layers/clips for changing clips, rather than having to use the mouse pointer.
Just a thought... Is it also possible to edit the keyboard/midi assignments as in R2? That actually made a lot of sense to me! ;)

Incidentally, the M7 that I use is in fact a tablet PC, which does actually work really well with the R3 interface, although 'writing' with it for 8 hours for a night does lead to stiff fingers. Not to mention the possibility of losing the pen in the gunk that accumulates on most club floors! ;)
But I'd still rather use the midi controller knobs and buttons instead...

I think this will do what you want:

Edit the Application Key Map (Mapping > Edit Application Midi Map)

Set the focs to Deck (in the mapping window in the bottom left)

Map each of the clip slots to a midi key

Map each of the layer selectors (the bit with the layer name on) to the buttons you want to use to select layers

Set the clip target to the active layer (Composition > Clip Target > Active Layer)

Clips will now play on the currently selected layer when they are triggered.

Is that what you are after?

Dan.

Aha. I see what you mean...
Not quite.
That would work if I had enough buttons for all the deck clips.
Working with 3 layers so to select them individually I'd need 3 x (the buttons that I have available).

I guess what I was more after was:
Select clip (column + row), into layer (that is possibly not on the same row nor the active later).

So if 'column select' didn't select all clips in that column and make them 'live' it might be possible.
I think I might stick with the magic tablet pen for the moment.
Must find some string to attach it so I don't lose it. ;)

Although your answer did help with finding the separate buttons for preview and load clip :)
