Hi,

I'm just wondering how many layers others use when they perform.

And which content for which layer?

Okay, I start

I've tried with 4. 2 for background and 2 for foreground clips. But I think 4 are too much. I could not handle all the effects assigned to the four layers (with MIDI). And most of the time, only 2 layers were active (opacity > 0).

Right now I'm using a 4 layer setup, but I usually only have 3 active. The 4th is for special effects, and extra overlays. I got my SL25 MKII mapped for all 4, but I don't really need that many. But I'm always experimenting with new ways of mixing, so I love the fact that resolume 3 is unlimited in the amount of layers.

i have different ways of using avenue....

sometimes i use 4 or 5 layers, but use the solo and bypass buttons a lot to switch things up - i never make a clip that is complete on its own, i make components, so that multiple components go together to make a clip which means i often use multiple layers but its not as "busy" as it may sound

sometimes i use 7 - two sets of 3 assingned to the crossfader and the other for text / masks / ect. the a/b fader setup is great for adding contrast and hard cuts between groups of footage and key points in the music you are vjing to. ( this works nicely with a dualheadtogo as you can essentialy use one computer as two seperate inputs on the video mixer )

if im doing a mapped screen setup which uses layer masks, the number of layers is often the same as the total number of screen sections + 1 for a mask which is all of the screen sections in one to make sure the end result is tidy.

so my answer is ...... anywhere between 4 and 11 ( i havnt chosen an option in the poll )

I always use three. The top two usually with the opacity set to BPM or audio spectrum. The third layer opacity 100%. The third layer is always ready for when the DJ's do a breakdown or when a band goes into a bridge.

mostly I mix between 3 layers.
But always have 4 layers open in the composition for an extra layers, this usually contains an audio track, or like a "home" layer to go back to.
