the feature works as far as capturing an image and putting it in the deck, but where does it get stored?

In the same folder as the regular video recordings. You can set this in the Video Preferences.

ok, found it, thanks :)

anyway of making the resulting picture usable as a mask? ie - drag and drop onto the composition / layer mask slot? it shows as being there but has no effect.

Hmm that's interesting, what we do is the following. If you load a picture as mask and it has an alpha channel we use this for the mask. If the picture has no alpha channel we use red channel to be used as the mask.
In this case the snapshot (.PNG file) has an alpha channel but all it's alpha values are full on. So the mask works but the alpha channel is useless in this case.
