GPU or CPU?

Hi guys, I'm toying with the idea of adding another laptop to the set-up (My current one is a Dell Inspiron 1720 with T7250, 2Gb RAM, 256Mb nVidia 8600 and Samsung SSD). Has to be a PC, not a Mac, for compatibility with other software.
In looking at the current specs, most seem to come with GeForce and ATi cards, with either 256Mb or 512Mb of dedicated graphics. The actual processor specs vary wildly between T7250's and P8700's.
Although I know the general answer is "get the fastest everything you can afford", when choosing a laptop it is all pre-configured so that isn't an option (unless you have a LOT of cash). Many that have more graphics memory have slower processors and vice versa...
So, would it make sense to go with a model that has a slower processor but 512Mb of Graphics memory or a faster processor model with only 256Mb?
Also, which would be the better GPU for Resolume - nVidia 9600 or ATi 3470? I know the nVidia seems to benchmark higher on test sites, but I'm not sure if Resolume has been fully optimised for nVidia the way it has for ATi cards.
Thanks,
Fordy

OK no probs, there's a lot of benchmarking info on the www, so I'll carry on with the research
Just one question: Could someone tell me which is the more important benchmark when considering a graphics card for Resolume - The 2D performance or the 3D performance? Some other posts in here quote 3D benchmarks, but others refer to the video stream being 2D
Thanks in advance,
Fordy

What about some good OpenGL benchmark?
Any suggestions?
Is this right:
- 2D benchmark is good for checking the overall performance in Resolume.
- OpenGL benchmark is good for checking the VFX performance (FFGL).
Wouldn't it be possible to benchmark in Resolume? For example defining some 2D and 3D VFX and then applying them one at a time to one layer and let it run for a while and note the fps. Not very scientific but it would generate some values to compare at least.

Many thanks for that!
I was thinking the same thing myself about benchmarking in Resolume. If someone could create a project that would stress-test the CPU and GPU, it would be good to run it an post up our framerates, along with our hardware spec.
As you say, it won't be scientific (there are too many other variables such as b/g processes etc), but it may be a good starting point for people (like me

) choosing new hardware.
Another question: What do people consider the minimum acceptable framerate to be for Resolume? I've had a look through a lot of posts mentioning framerate, and some seem disappointed if the framerate drops to 30fps, even though this is still higher than the refresh rate for projectors...

Depends on what people are running. If you have some simple composition @ 640x480 and it drops below 30fps I'd be cursing as well
Seriously, it all depends on what! is running @ 30fps. And as long as there is no database to compare it'll be hard to tell or a lot of searching and comparing to tell if these 30fps are good or bad.
Maybe I'll just start a new thread later on. Any ideas on which VFX should be taken to compare performance?

Have a look at my batch:

Nice work

Will give that a try...
